Guy Buttery

Profile of the performer Guy Buttery: “…one of South Africa’s most influential artists over the past decade." – The Sunday Independent

“Guy Buttery is something of a National treasure” says South Africa's leading newspaper The Mercury. With sell-out performances in the US, the UK, Australia, France, Italy and all over Southern Africa, Guy is Africa's biggest acoustic music export. His debut album in 2002, "When I Grow Up..." was nominated for 'Best Instrumental‟ and 'Best Newcomer' at the South African Music Awards (SAMA's) making him the youngest nominee in the history of the event. He then went onto to win a SAMA in 2010 for his album “Fox Hill Lane” and again in 2014 for his first live concert recording, “Live in KwaZulu”. He has also received other major National accolades including the "The Standard Bank Golden Ovation Award" chosen out of 4600 performers at the National Arts Festival in South Africa, the world's second biggest Arts Festival after Edinburgh, and again in 2012 for his performances with longtime collaborator, Nibs van der Spuy. This award led to sold out shows at numerous festivals and concert halls in South Africa and Europe receiving rave reviews for both Guy‟s live performances and his recorded work. Buttery was then invited to perform with the 52 piece KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, dubbed “Africa's greatest ensemble” and was also voted “Top Live Show” by The Cape Times.

Apart from achievements within his home country of South Africa, Guy Buttery's worldwide scope and recognition rose exponentially post the release of his award winning album “Fox Hill Lane” with invitations to perform all over the globe. Apart from the obvious accolades surrounding winning awards, Guy was met with nothing but glowing reports from the international press. The most noticeable of these being a 3 page spread in the prestigious Guitar Player Magazine, the World‟s biggest guitar related publication, where he was featured alongside Steve Morse (Deep Purple/Dixie Dregs) and Brian May (Queen). Following all of this, Guy landed a major guitar endorsement with SA‟s leading guitar builders Casimi Guitars. His interpretation of “The Book of Right On” went on to feature on a Joanna Newsom covers compilation alongside luminaries such as M. Ward, Billy Bragg and Owen Pallet. Guy was also invited to perform at the South African Music Awards (Africa's answer to the Grammys) where he was broadcast to an audience of over 4 million strong in one of the country's most watched televised events. In 2013, Guy was invited to join world renowned guitar legends Preston Reed and Jon Gomm for a series of concerts with the touring International Guitar Night. The media cited him “as one of South Africa’s finest exponents of the acoustic guitar.”

Quoting the Press:

“… extraordinary…” – Rolling Stone Magazine

“Guy Buttery’s goal is to stretch the boundaries of fingerstyle guitar to their outermost limits. The most diverse and intriguing fingerstyle artist in recent memory.” – Guitar Player Magazine, USA

“… his music has a subtle grace and power all of its own. Though his technical prowess is bewildering, Buttery immerses himself entirely into the soul of his guitar, coaxing sonic shapes and forms of such startling originality from it that his instrument acts as a kind of lightning conductor for the sound of another realm.” – The Mail & Guardian
